Plasma is often described as the fourth state of matter, after solids, liquids and gases. In the Helix Nebula dress, it appears inside sculptural hand-blown glass structures that curve around the shoulders, creating luminous orange-red filaments.

A Dress Inspired by the Universe
The creation forms part of the Sonic Starquakes collection, inspired by cosmic phenomena, stellar vibrations and the mysterious forces that shape the universe.
The Helix Nebula design takes its name from the planetary nebula and combines its glowing plasma structures with thousands of delicate, iridescent hand-blown spheres placed over nearly invisible tulle. The result creates the illusion of luminous particles floating around the body, somewhere between a celestial sculpture and a living organism.
Capturing Energy Through Fashion
The collection also explores electricity through another experimental creation featuring branching patterns reminiscent of lightning. Developed with scientific and engineering expertise, the piece was electrically charged to create fractal pathways through its structure.
Together, these designs reflect Van Herpen’s fascination with forces that cannot usually be seen or touched. Rather than simply representing nature and science, her work brings their processes directly into the construction of couture.
