Suit up & show up

As a male guest, what suit would you pick when you’ve been invited to a wedding? There is a range of questions to be answered regarding the dress code.

Weddings are increasingly becoming a way to promote your identity, where outfits help communicate the couple’s and the guests’ social roles and relationship status to the community throughout the ceremony. The color, cut, and details are used to encourage individualism and style, while still operating within the expected masculine design frame.

The suits are usually cut like everyday business suits, which makes them more practical and comfortable, focusing on mobility rather than spectacle. However, this does not mean you should trade one for the other; there is a way you can show up, be fashionable, and still spend all night (or day) on the dance floor.

Things to keep in mind

For instance, follow the dress code first, if it’s a “Black tie” event, a dark tuxedo, white dress shirt, black bow tie, and patent shoes are the usual take, while “formal” includes a dark suit with colors such as navy or charcoal with a white/light shirt and a tie. Daytime or summer weddings often display lighter blues, greys or patterns. If you’re a bolder guest, you can wear checked fabrics, subtle jacquards, or deep colors (bottle green, burgundy) if the dress code and time of day allow it.

Moreover, fit is the most important part when choosing a suit. The jacket should follow the shoulders, close neatly at the waist, the sleeves should show a bit of the shirt cuff, and the trousers should have a slight break. Slim or slightly tapered cuts are the current norm for wedding tailoring. Avoid flashy belts, sneakers, and very loud logos. Protocolo is a good reference for this style as they specialize exclusively in ceremony and party wear for men.
