Interview with James Elias - Demetrios

Forty-five years after founding his brand, Demetrios James Elias remains a symbol of elegance, innovation, and dedication in the world of bridal fashion.

From his family roots to his global expansion, his story reflects the power of passion and commitment to beauty. Today, together with his daughter Eleni, he celebrates a legacy that spans generations.

  1. This year marks the 45th anniversary of Demetrios. Looking back, what does this milestone mean to you on a personal and professional level?

On a personal level, it’s a great achievement to have built a company that has lasted this long — to have experienced the highs and lows and still remain strong and true to who we are. We’ve never lost sight of what defines Demetrios.
Professionally, I owe everything to my family, to our incredible partners, and to the dedicated employees who have been part of this journey. None of this would have been possible without them. This company was built on family values and tradition — principles I inherited from my mother, not only through her work but through the way she lived her life.

  1. You were born in Athens and later moved to the United States. How has your multicultural background influenced your vision and creativity as a bridal designer?

Growing up between Greece and New York exposed me to many cultures, aesthetics, and different ways of expressing beauty. It inspired me to design for every kind of bride. That diversity shaped my creativity — it allows me to create gowns that reflect a wide range of tastes, personalities, and traditions from around the world.

  1. Your career began in your family’s bridal shop in Ohio. Do you remember a defining moment when you realized you wanted to dedicate your life to bridal fashion?

I remember brides coming into the shop asking for styles that simply didn’t exist in the market. I wanted to create designs that adapted to each bride — to make sure there was something for everyone. That’s how it all began. Over time, we developed our signature styles, but diversity in our designs and aesthetic has always remained at the heart of what we do.

  1. Demetrios is known for its timeless elegance, romantic silhouettes, and exquisite detailing. How would you describe the essence of your design philosophy after four decades?

My philosophy has always been to create gowns that appeal to a wide variety of women, designs that capture both contemporary fashion trends and timeless beauty. I love experimenting with intricate details and innovative ideas, but always in a way that feels elegant and enduring.

  1. Bridal fashion has evolved tremendously since 1980. What major changes have you witnessed, and how has Demetrios adapted without losing its essence?

Over the years, brides have become much more involved in the creative process. They want to express their individuality and add a personal touch to their gown. In the 80s we saw very glamorous looks; the 90s brought a shift toward minimalist sophistication. Today, bridal fashion is all about self-expression: mixing styles, silhouettes, fabrics, and necklines to create something truly unique. The wedding day has evolved into an entire bridal journey, and we love being part of that transformation.

  1. Celebrating this anniversary in Milan, one of the world’s fashion capitals, feels symbolic. What does this city represent for you and for the brand?

Milan is an integral part of our identity. It’s the heart of fashion, a city that embodies modern glamour, sophistication, and timeless romance. Being here constantly inspires us to evolve while staying true to our core of elegance and craftsmanship.

  1. Your daughter Eleni is now following in your footsteps. How do you envision this generational transition and the future of Demetrios under her influence?

I feel deeply proud and honoured that my daughter wants to follow in my footsteps. She brings strong vision, refined taste, and both strategic and creative insight. I’m confident that under her influence, Demetrios will continue to grow while remaining faithful to its values and spirit.

  1. To finish, what message would you like to share with brides around the world who dream of wearing a Demetrios gown on their big day?

Feel beautiful, feel like yourself. Thank you for allowing us to be part of such an important moment in your life. Embrace your beauty, enjoy every second, and make it a day you’ll never forget.
