The role of social media in wedding fashion

The role of social media in wedding fashion is undeniable, shaping trends, inspiring couples, and redefining how bridal style goes viral.

Social media is a revolutionary tool in nearly every industry, and wedding fashion is no exception, right?

Planning the big day is something the bride and groom spend a long time doing. Nowadays, with unlimited access to social media, platforms such as Pinterest, Instagram, and TikTok have taken over trends, becoming powerful and influential in the decision-making process regarding the wedding day.

Social media and wedding preparation

Social media inspires engaged couples, and its viral trends influence every ceremony aspect, revolutionizing how brides and grooms choose their wedding gowns.

In this case, viral trends are a major source of inspiration, and designers now consider them when developing new collections, often collaborating with influencers as a new form of publicity. Additionally, many brides turn to YouTube or TikTok for additional inspiration, searching for wedding dress-shopping vlogs before making their decision.

After all, weddings are a subject of great public interest. High-profile ceremonies showcased in the media receive millions of views and interactions. For instance, Hailey Bieber’s nuptial ceremony took over the internet for a couple of days, and her Off-White dress with “Till Death Do Us Part” embroidered on the veil sparked a trend of personalized veils.

The pressure to have a picture-perfect wedding

Since most weddings today are shared on social media, the pressure to make the perfect choices has increased. Brides no longer want just a beautiful gown – they want one that reflects their personality and individuality! As a result, social media has fuelled the rise of customized wedding dresses.

Many weddings are now curated experiences designed with Instagram aesthetics in mind. This is evident in the creation of personalized hashtags, the hiring of videographers to capture “Instagrammable moments,” and even wedding content creators who document weddings specifically for social media.

Despite being a great source of inspiration, social media also promotes the pressure to have a “picture-perfect wedding,” adding to the stress and overwhelming emotions surrounding the big day. It has set high visual standards, created unrealistic expectations, and shifted the couple’s experience toward how their wedding translates to social platforms.

From a fashion perspective, it is no longer just about selecting the perfect gown and makeup but ensuring they photograph well. This has led to multiple outfit changes throughout the wedding, filter-proof makeup, and even pre-wedding procedures to make sure every detail looks flawless.
