Cleanse, moisturize, and protect: the golden rule of skincare. But have you ever wondered if there’s a real link between makeup and SPF?
When it comes to skin care, one of the most important steps is protection. Our skin should be protected all year round, even if it’s a rainy day. The emission of ultraviolet (UV) rays is constant regardless of the weather; on cloudy days, even if you don’t feel it, UVA rays are always present. These UV rays hit the skin slightly more gently and are mostly responsible for skin ageing.
On the other hand, UVB rays, which we experience on the hottest summer days, are responsible for sunburn due to the greater penetration of the UV rays.
What can happen?
Since there is a wide variety of sunscreen compositions and textures, some components of the sunscreen may not match the composition of the foundation, leading, for example, to the product not adapting well to the bride’s skin due to the sunscreen applied underneath.
Although the makeup artist can test the product to make sure there’s no Flashback on the client’s skin, it becomes a challenge to guarantee how sunscreen will perform in professional photographs. Since sunscreen is a cream with a white pigment, there is a chance that it may reveal itself when the photographer uses the flash, even if it melts into the skin during application.
How can I protect my skin?
Even though there are some issues to consider, there is always a way to maintain your skincare routine:
- Talk to your makeup artist
- Test the performance of the sunscreen during the makeup trial
- Use a foundation with SPF
- Try a protective mist
- Use products with SPF on a daily basis to ensure your skin is protected and moisturised
Always ensure that the product you are using is suitable for your skin type to achieve the best possible results.
